Advantage
The design of a tuned filter cabinet is used for power factor compensation in power grids that generate harmonics,as well as amplification to suppress harmonics.
Each section of the tuned filter cabinet is composed of a capacitor and a reactor connected in series, forming as series resonant circuit The resonant frequency of the capacitor and reactor is tuned to be lower than the lowest harmonic present in the power grid, usually the fifth order (250Hz).
Below the tuning frequency of the resonant circuit, such as the fundamental frequency (50Hz), the tuning filter is capacitive and emits reactive power to the power grid. If the tuning frequency is higher than the tuning frequency, the tuning filter is inductive,which mean it will not amplify other ordinary harmonics including 5th, 7th , and 11th order. Tuned filters can also absorb a portion of the low order harmonics in the power grid, ranging from 20% to 50%.
Similar to conventional capacitor banks, each tuned filter is controlled by an automatic power factor controller to switch according to the reactive power requirements.
